CHB Reader “James” and Pal “Dave” Yelp About Strong Place

Strong Place original tipster “James” was joined by his pal “Dave” at the opening of Strong Place (270 Court Street) last night.  ”Dave” files this report on Yelp:

The food was probably in 4-4.5 star territory, but the beer was truly uncommon and remarkable and pushes SP to 5 stars. Allagash Curieux, DFH’s Palo Santo Maron, Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare? These I had sampled at taps only once or twice in my lifetime. Some solid standards were also there including Prohibition Speakeasy, DFH’s 60 Minute, and Allagash White. Of course, I’m also forgetting the other 18 beers, most of which I wasn’t familiar with (no small task!). Bar Great Harry, your neighborhood lockdown on off-the-beaten-path craft beer is over, I’d say. Only minor quibble of the entire experience: Your $5 beer purchase will not be a full pint – 12 ounces, I’d wager.

The owner came by afterward to check in with us and my three buddies got right to it: “We live upstairs. We’ll be here all the time. ALL the time.” I live about 7 blocks away and distance is no object when food & drink this good is involved.

Investigation Continues at 270 Court Street

Brownstoner told us about the about the still-papered up space at 270 Court Street, with the passing of the scheduled opening of a new restaurant from the owners of Bocca Lupo.  What’s up with 270 Court Street? We hit the streets, pulled out our magnifying glasses, and got the scoop. The buzz at surrounding businesses was that the inside was rumored to be finished, but with no sign of opening. An employee from Brownstone Realty noted that he heard the restaurant was still waiting on approvals from the city.

Owner of the property Abelardo Argibay said he did not know when the restaurant will open, but said it will likely be “soon.” The delay remains a mystery, but stay tuned for more updates!

Demo at Char No. 4 Gets Folks Talking Moonshine

The NY Times reports on the growing interest in moonshine, among other things, today:

NY Times: IN early April, Kris Comstock, a representative for the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, conducted a seminar on bourbon at Char No. 4, a bar in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, that offers 150 kinds of American whiskey.

Among the bourbons he poured were Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare and Blanton’s. But his students weren’t interested in those.

“The first thing that everyone wanted to taste was the white dog,” he said. “We make products that win amazing awards all around the world, and they want to taste the white dog.”

Eater Checks Out Ceol

Eater.com photo

Our pals at Eater survey the action at Boerum Hill’s Ceol:

Eater NY: Ceol hosts its weekly Song Club, a singer-songwriter forum curated by Niall Connolly, a wisp of a man with a wisp of a reddish beard. Folks come from all around, even out of state, to audition for a spot on the ticket. Afterwards, the musicians grab a Guinness and smoke in the back patio, pack up their gear and talk about their recent cross-country trip in which they were busted in Indiana for possessing two one-hitters and had to spend a night in jail and pay $900 in fines. “We have to drive back in five days for a court date,” said one. “The lawyer I met basically apologized for the laws of her state.” The talk at the bar around midnight is mainly accented, and slurringly so, “feckin’” this and “feckin’” that, but all in good humor. The smooth-skulled young bartender smiles benignly at anything that’s said to him, pulling an Irish pint for this one, a local Brooklyn brew for that one.
