Italian eatery Sosta opens on Atlantic Ave.

All photos by Mark Hayes

New Italian eatery, Sosta is now open at 145 Atlantic Ave. between Henry and Clinton Streets.  The menu focuses mainly on pizzas, with a selection of appetizers, salads and panini (lunch only).  Sample selections include the Valdostana (mozzarella, ricotta, parmigiano & gorgonzola) and Umbria (tomato, mozzarella, pancetta and prosciuto).

The interior has a cozy, modern feel, with wood floors and an open kitchen.  There is also a large bar stocked with wine and beer.  Take out is available and delivery service will start next week.  The pizza man, Giuseppe (pictured below), said that  Happy Hour and specials begin next week.  Daily pizza, pasta and dessert specials rotate and add to an already extensive menu.  The restaurant is open Tuesday-Sunday 12-11pm.

Ted & Honey Gets Liquor License, Eyes Former Chicory Space

Neighborhood favorite Ted & Honey [264 Clinton Street] has acquired a liquor license, allowing the cafe to begin serving alcohol around Halloween.  Sixpoint beer and wine from Long Island vinyards will be served from 6 to 11pm, along with small plates.  Owners Chris “Ted” Jackson & sister Michelle Mannix have redesigned the layout, allowing more floor space and plan to close around 4:30 or 5pm before reopening for dinner and bar service.

The owners are also planning on taking over the space formerly occupied by Chicory (and more recently, Ultimate Burgers and Dogs) at 234 Degraw Street to install a commercial kitchen.  They will do all of the baking for Ted & Honey there and serve coffee and pastries.  The new storefront isn’t designed to be a sit-down establishment, however.  “You can get baked goods… there will be benches outside”, said Jackson, “but it’s not a cafe.”

Bar Tabac Closed?

@fitbeth just tweeted this photo of Bar Tabac.  Is it closed for good?  Anyone have the scoop?

Update: Reader “Michael” who had the time to check the bar’s website points us to this revelation:

Bar Tabac will be closed for renovations from Monday August 23rd to Wednesday August 25th. See you on Thursday!

But is that the whole story?

CHB Reader “James” and Pal “Dave” Yelp About Strong Place

Strong Place original tipster “James” was joined by his pal “Dave” at the opening of Strong Place (270 Court Street) last night.  ”Dave” files this report on Yelp:

The food was probably in 4-4.5 star territory, but the beer was truly uncommon and remarkable and pushes SP to 5 stars. Allagash Curieux, DFH’s Palo Santo Maron, Sixpoint Gorilla Warfare? These I had sampled at taps only once or twice in my lifetime. Some solid standards were also there including Prohibition Speakeasy, DFH’s 60 Minute, and Allagash White. Of course, I’m also forgetting the other 18 beers, most of which I wasn’t familiar with (no small task!). Bar Great Harry, your neighborhood lockdown on off-the-beaten-path craft beer is over, I’d say. Only minor quibble of the entire experience: Your $5 beer purchase will not be a full pint – 12 ounces, I’d wager.

The owner came by afterward to check in with us and my three buddies got right to it: “We live upstairs. We’ll be here all the time. ALL the time.” I live about 7 blocks away and distance is no object when food & drink this good is involved.

Investigation Continues at 270 Court Street

Brownstoner told us about the about the still-papered up space at 270 Court Street, with the passing of the scheduled opening of a new restaurant from the owners of Bocca Lupo.  What’s up with 270 Court Street? We hit the streets, pulled out our magnifying glasses, and got the scoop. The buzz at surrounding businesses was that the inside was rumored to be finished, but with no sign of opening. An employee from Brownstone Realty noted that he heard the restaurant was still waiting on approvals from the city.

Owner of the property Abelardo Argibay said he did not know when the restaurant will open, but said it will likely be “soon.” The delay remains a mystery, but stay tuned for more updates!

Demo at Char No. 4 Gets Folks Talking Moonshine

The NY Times reports on the growing interest in moonshine, among other things, today:

NY Times: IN early April, Kris Comstock, a representative for the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, conducted a seminar on bourbon at Char No. 4, a bar in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, that offers 150 kinds of American whiskey.

Among the bourbons he poured were Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare and Blanton’s. But his students weren’t interested in those.

“The first thing that everyone wanted to taste was the white dog,” he said. “We make products that win amazing awards all around the world, and they want to taste the white dog.”
