Old Stone House Presents “Gin in June” Friday Evening

This Friday evening, June 10, from 6:30 to 8:30, the historic Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street (between 4th and 5th avenues), will present “Gin in June,” a festive party featuring “traditional gin cocktails and 1880s bar food.” Food historian Sarah Lohman will be there to discuss the fare. Tickets are $45 if purchased in advance here, or $50 at the door.

“Total Smith Street Immersion,” With More Free Beer, Saturday, June 18

If you attended the Total Atlantic Avenue Immersion, rocked some free beer and discounts and want some more, or if you missed it and wish you hadn’t, Brooklyn Brewery and Brooklyn Based will present the Total Smith Street Immersion on Saturday, June 18, from noon to 6:00 p.m. Free half pints of Brooklyn Brewery beers or ales will be available at 61 Local, Bar Great Harry, Gowanus Yacht Club and Angry Wade’s, and discounts will be given at other Smith Street establishments. More details as they become available.

Update: “To be a part of it, you’ll need to pick up a free immersion card at By Brooklyn or Brooklyn Tattoo/Urban Folk Art Gallery starting at noon on June 18. There will only be 500 in circulation, so appoint a responsible friend to pick up yours if you can’t get to Smith St. early. “Beer for Beasts” at Bell House Saturday, March 26

Red Hook’s Sixpoint and Beeradvocate are sponsoring Beer for Beasts, a fundraiser for the Humane Society of New York, to be held at The Bell House, 149 7th Street (between 2nd and 3rd avenues), on Saturday, March 26. There will be two sessions: from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The event will feature at least 16 new brews from Sixpoint, food selections from Calexico, Mile End, Pizza Moto, Prime Meats, and Brooklyn Soda Works, live entertainment by Jersey Fresh Burlesque and music selections by Chances with Wolves. Tickets are $60, are good for admission to one session, and may be purchased here

Community Roundtable with Daniel Squadron Tonight

The Cobble Hill Association will host a Community Roundtable with State Senator Daniel Squadron tonight at Christ Church (326 Clinton Street at Kane Street). The meeting is open to all members of the public and will be a forum to discuss any issues or concerns directly with the State Senator. It will commence at 7:30pm.

61 Local to Host Brooklyn Foodies at Grand Opening

This Saturday, February 12th, 61 Local (61 Bergen Street at Smith) will have their official grand opening party. The new space is being deemed a “public house” and will serve locally sourced beer and food. The party will host a who’s who of the Brooklyn food scene with representatives from SCRATCHbread, Sixpoint Craft Ales, Kelso, Salvatore Bklyn, Anarchy in a Jar and many others. The menu, which can be viewed on Grub Street, is comprised of small plates and shared plates.

Brooklyn Accent at Union Hall Feb 1

If you have some free time Tuesday evening and a spare $5, consider a trip to Union Hall in Park Slope to see Adult Education Presents: Brooklyn. There will be presentations on Coney Island; corrupt Brooklyn politicians of yore; and Brooklyn’s annexation by New York. And I will be presenting on the Brooklyn accent. Questions I’ll be answering include: Does dese dem and dose qualify as a Brooklyn accent? Where does youse come from? And how do I curse in Brooklynese?

Well, you should be so lucky to find out. Hope to see you there, I could use some friendly faces!

Millman Opposes Third School at P.S. 9/M.S. 571 Site; Hearing This Evening

State Assembly Member Joan Millman has declared her opposition to the City Department of Education’s proposal to relocate a charter school, the Brooklyn East Collegiate School, to the building now occupied by both P.S. 9 and M.S. 571, at 80 Underhill Avenue. This would mean that three schools would occupy the building until M.S. 571 is phased out.
