While we try to be everywhere and cover everything, the sad truth is that it ain’t possible (especially while working in Manhattan).
What do you want to know more about? What are we lacking? What are you doing this weekend?

Alex and Simon Host ACS Benefit at BellTel Lofts
The luxury high rise BellTel Lofts was the place to be last night, as CHB faves Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen hosted the American Cancer Society‘s “Eat, Drink and Be Hopeful” food and wine event. Alex and Simon were among the many on hand to check out some of the tasteful silent auction items and raffle prizes, and of course to sample some of Brooklyn’s finest purveyors of food and drink, including Brooklyn Brewery, DuMont, Henry’s End, Palo Santo and many more. Margo Lewis, the brains (and brawn) behind Cake Bliss and the newly opened Ms. Dahlia’s Cafe, presented a cake decorating lesson in the VIP room. For Ms. Lewis, it’s personal: she’s a cancer survivor herself.
Alex McCord explained her inspiration for offering to host the delectable evening:
Simon and I were so happy to support the Brooklyn chapter of ACS – cancer unfortunately touches so many people and between the two of us have friends and family who have fought and survived the disease and have also sadly lost a few as well. We need to continue raising money for both R&D, early diagnosis and also not forget the caregivers who give of themselves to those who are fighting the disease.
Last night we had a chance to give back in so many ways – raising money to fight cancer, celebrating Brooklyn and all the great small business owners who provided the food and drink!

Brooklyn Farmacy: How to Make an Egg Cream
Brooklyn Farmacy is now open for business, and those wanting their milkshake fix need look no further than 513 Henry St. We paid a visit and were gifted with an egg cream and official paper Farmacy cap—I ended up loving their egg cream so much I filmed this tutorial. So here it is, on the house.

The Invisible Dog to Host Premiere of “Bay Rizz: The Man For You”
On June 19th, Zero Film Festival presents the premiere of Bay Rizz: The Man For You at The Invisible Dog Gallery [map]. The Man For You was shot in January, 2010 in Brooklyn’s storied Bay Ridge neighborhood. The film is the 10th short in a series that chronicles the story of Bay Ridge’s unofficial Mayor, Bay Rizz, and his mission to sort out often neglected local issues. The film provides a glimpse into Mayor Bay Rizz’s personal history and enables viewers to understand how he became the man that he is today through an engaging rap music video parody.

Breaking News: BKLYN Yard to Close!
Last weekend will be the last weekend of the BKLYN Yard! The Yard will be missed by many.
This just in from MeanRed Productions, operators of the BKLYN Yard:
BKLYN Yard is closing.
With heavy hearts, a message from MeanRed To our Yardies…
Over the past four years, we have worked hard to create BKLYN Yard. You watched us grow from a small unknown independent venue into a space that hosted the best tacos in NYC, incredible talent (Lee Scratch Perry, Kaiju Big Battel, Dan Deacon & Jose Gonzalez to name a few), the Sunday Best dance series, the Gowanus Harvest Fest, the BK County Fair, Score! Pop-Up Mega Swap, Parked: Food Truck Festival, and countless lobster bakes, pig roasts, BBQs and more. This past Memorial Day Weekend, we were so proud to open our doors and display all the hard work we have been putting into the space to make this summer even better…from our new bar, to our atm, to our bocce court. Thousands of you came out and supported us and made it one of the most beautiful weekends we have had yet, so we are sad to announce, that last weekend was the final weekend of BKLYN Yard in our Carroll Gardens home.
Our landlord of the past four years, who used to share our vision for BKLYN Yard, notified us on Tuesday May 1st, that they would no longer honor our lease which had been in place since early this year. They chose not to give us an opportunity to renegotiate, and requested that we take what we have built, and terminate all of our confirmed plans and schedule for BKLYN Yard this summer.
BKLYN Yard is a labor of love for MeanRed, rooted in our core company values: Love for artists, food, music and community. We are sad to see our passion project go in its brightest year, and are sad to let down all the people who have support and worked with us for the past 3 summers.
But if there is one thing we pride ourselves in, its our ability to think outside the box, to take a leap when there is no net, and to reach our highest visions. We wouldn’t be who we are if we let hurdles keep us down. If we can turn a dim sum restaurant into a nightclub, a loft into a members-only club, and a toxic yard into a beautiful summer oasis… we can do anything.
Rest assured, our renegade spirit and love for pop-up spaces will come alive again this summer — very possibly with the same collaborators and programming you see on our current schedule… And very possibly even better than we had planned before.
Doug Singer, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter’s Sunday Best series will continue on at another location, including this Sunday with DJ Koze. You can keep an eye on them at sundaybestnyc.com
In the meantime, we want to say:
Thank you for sharing in BKLYN Yard. We hope you’ll continue on this crazy ride with us as we bring you what’s next. Stay tuned, we will pop-up where you least expect it, with the words: “Built by BKLYN Yard”
With love,
MeanRed Productions

Come Out and Play Festival This Weekend
Explore a world of updated street games and family-friendly fun this weekend at the Come Out and Play Festival! This year’s festival will be hosted by the Brooklyn Lyceum [map].
Each year the Come Out & Play settles in a different neighborhood and explores the limits of play and games in that space. We’ve played among the galleries of Chelsea, played amidst the thriving nightlife of the Lower East Side and navigated the throngs of tourists in Times Square. This year the festival lands in Brooklyn to explore a new set of challenges. We will explore the potential for play in a converted 100-year old bathhouse. We will find ways to engage a residential neighborhood like Park Slope with games. We will discover the playful uses of a post-industrial swath of warehouses and canals like Gowanus. And we’ll make games from the rich texture of a historic public cemetery like Green-Wood.
Brooklyn Repertory Opera to Present “Die Fledermaus”
It’s the revenge of the bat! Brooklyn Repertory Opera will present “a production is that fully staged with orchestra and will include ‘special surprise guest stars:’”
Composed non-stop in forty-two ‘nights of veritable rapture’ this is Johann Strauss II’s most celebrated and popular operetta – intoxicatingly melodious and exuberant. Mistaken identities, flirtations at a masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written, a blissful show! The Overture is one of the most popular ever written, with five of the best tunes woven into a framework of the great ‘Fledermaus Waltz’.
