Reader: Cobble Hill Super Service Ain’t So Super

Recently the Cobble Hill Blog received a tip about the shady practices at the Cobble Hill Service Center.  It seems that this is not such an unusual occurrence and was discussed on the Brooklyn Heights Blog on October 21, 2008, as well as here and here.  According to the e-mail below, the DMV has received numerous complaints but nothing has been done.  On the bright side, the folks that reported this incident took their car to another mechanic in the Gowanus area and the car passed the inspection perfectly, avoiding the $500 repairs they claim Tony said were needed.

Hi there,

My girlfriend and I had a horrible experience today at Cobble Hill Super Service. My girlfriend wrote about it today on Yelp so I’ll let
her fill you in the details [with her description]. Continue Reading →

Business of the Week: Ted & Honey

Regulars at the lovely Cobble Hill Park will know well that Ted & Honey at 264 Clinton Street provide park-goers and nabe residents alike with high-quality food, beverages and culinary accoutrements. With Iron & Wine wafting out towards the sidewalk seating, I spoke to Chris Jackson (“Ted”), head chef, and his sister Michelle Mannix (“Honey”) about their already much-beloved neighborhood spot, one that Time Out says is “just what a neighborhood café should be.”

Helping Neighbors – Jeep Guy

Dear Jeep Guy –
This photo was taken two weeks ago, and posted in a discussion about Barneys. This morning I noticed that your car is still parked in the same spot, but now covered in Sanitation Dept stickers and scribbles about NYPD Towing.
You might want to move it ASAP.

Sincerely,
CHB

CHB Chief Correspondent Featured on WCBS

New York may soon become the first state to ban minors from tanning salons. Let’s hear it for the Empire State! With new research showing that even a single tanning booth session can increase the risk of melanoma by 75%, it’s high time that stricter regulations were placed on the salons.

WCBS Medical reporter Dr. Holly Phillips put together this story on the proposed ban. Malignant melanoma is the deadliest of skin cancers, and your friendly correspondent happens to be one of the few lucky survivors. Long-time local readers know that since 2008, I’ve kept people up to date on the latest news about skin cancer at groinstrong.com – with the help of WCBS, we’re reaching a much wider audience to educate about the risks – and the simple measures to prevent – advanced skin cancer.

Check out the video below and read the full story here.

Rolling Orange Rolls Into Nabe

Cobble Hill’s newest bike shop, Rolling Orange at 269 Baltic St, is all set for their grand opening tomorrow.

Rolling Orange is going to be more than a bike store; our mission is to introduce Dutch cargo and city bikes as a common part of the Brooklyn streetscape (and beyond). We are promoting a different urban life style; moving from ‘the fast lane into the slow lane’ with closer attention for what is going on in daily urban life. In addition to selling bikes and accessories, we start hosting several events –  from movie-nights, to lectures to bike-related events – in this way we would like to become a valued asset  to the local community.

Dutch bikes are rolling into your neighborhood. Join us Saturday, June 12th, 2-8pm to experience them for yourself. There’ll be bike rides, games, and prizes to win. Local food and local music, too. Even some special guest speakers. Everyone’s invited to this day of family-friendly fun. Come out and kick back with the newest bike shop on the block.

You can download an informational flyer here.

Business of the Week: Eton

“I just put one and one together and that’s how we got shave ice and dumplings.”

It’s not quite the formula one might expect, but the combination of shave ice and dumplings has quickly made Eton at 205 Sackett Street one of the most lauded food vendors in the neighborhood. The dumplings in particular (and the pork and beef combination recipe specifically) have received rave reviews and multiple local awards, a surprise to none who have pinned the delicious pockets between chopsticks, dipped them in the house-made plum sauce and given themselves over to dough-wrapped heaven.
