Briana’s Heartbroken Mom to “Cop” Who Let Her Baby Die: Man Up and Come Forward

While it’s still unknown if a bona fide NYPD officer was the man who quipped “I don’t do CPR” as 11 year old Briana Ojeda lay dying of an asthma attack on Henry Street Sunday, the girl’s mother pleaded with him to “man up” and identify himself to authorities. Update: Officials now say that an officer from the 84th Precinct is responsible. Continue Reading →

Was that an NYPD Officer Who Said “I Don’t Do CPR” and Let Asthmatic Girl Die?

Anyone who has ever been in an emergency medical situation knows just how precious time can become. That concept appears to have been lost on the NYPD officer, or auxiliary officer or traffic agent or private security guard who delayed little Briana Ojeda’s mother from getting her to Long Island College Hospital in time to save her life: Continue Reading →

FREE Theater Starts Next Week!

Smith Street Stage, a brand new Brooklyn-based theater company, will take the stage next week with their condensed rendition of Romeo & Juliet. The William Shakespeare play that consists of 20 characters will be played by five actors and streamlined to 90 minutes. The shows will be performed at Carroll Park August 16th-20th and 26th-28th at 6:30pm. It’s free of charge, and audience members can bring their own seating.

Using Carroll Park as their only set and eliminating elaborate costumes, Smith Street Stage hopes to put emphasis on the language by having it spoken by classically trained actors. The cast consists of locals from NYU Tisch, UConn Drama, and Yale Grad Acting.

Fore more information, including cast info, albums, and directions to the park, visit www.smithstreetstage.org.

Fresh Fruit CSA Accepting New Members

Sample Full Share

Want farm fresh fruit at an affordable price? Here’s your chance to stock up your fridge AND support a local farm! Red Jacket Orchards is offering a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) to locals. Become a member and pay a farm upfront for a share of produce that you can pick up at a nearby distribution spot once a week. Not only do you get high quality fruit at a cheaper price, but a CSA also guarantees revenue for the farm. From August through November, members are provided with the best produce the farm has to offer, like peaches, plums, pears, apples, grapes, and even jams and juices.

Unlike most markets,  CSA allows the consumer to learn about the farm heir food comes from, as well as the people who produce it. While most vegetable CSAs are sold out in the city, this fruit CSA is completely new and accepting new members!

Interested? Half shares are $13 and full shares are $22. The Brooklyn pickup center is at Brooklyn Pharmacy and Soda Fountain at 513 Henry Street in Carroll Gardens on Tuesdays from August 10th through November 9th 4-6:45pm. To see a sample share list and more information on membership visit http://redjacketorchardscsa.wordpress.com/ or email redjacketorchards@gmail.com.

More Bastille Day Bedlam

Smith Street overflowed with sand, sangria, and Francophiles yesterday at the 2010 Bastille Day celebration. Although temperatures reached 95 degrees, hundreds of party-ers participated, and (luckily) had plenty to drink to keep cool. I managed to snap a few pictures before the sweltering heat forced me to take run for AC and a couch.

The Sweet Smell of Carroll Gardens

The NY Daily News sniffs out the best and worst summer smells of New York City.  Carroll Gardens gets thumbs up for smelling nice:

NY Daily News: Walking along Court St. between Degraw and President Sts. in Carroll Gardens is a feast for the senses, in all the right ways.

“The whole street smells of brewing coffee, the smell of croissants, of freshly made dough. It’s an amazing mix,” said Maria Vasquez, 73. “But there’s one problem: It makes me hungry!”

With D’Amico’s coffee shop, Sal’s Pizzeria and Caputos Bake Shop, folks never seem to be in a rush as they amble by.

“This block is one of the best-smelling places in the city,” said UPS delivery man Matty Ianelli, 24. “This place smells homey. Like your mom just made a fresh pot of sauce.”

Area Mom, Listserv Get Shout Out in USA Today

In a USA Today article this morning about mommy listservs and sites,  the “Bococa” listserv gets a shout out:

USA Today: Based on a count of lists on Google and Yahoo, they seem to be more an urban than suburban phenomenon. “You live in New York City, you’re one of 8 million people, but yet you can feel all alone,” says Sheryl Braun, who founded the Bococa parents list for the neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn.

Parents tell Braun that they felt isolated and disconnected. But then they joined the list, which has 2,500 members, “and it made those things go away.”

Are you a parent? What local online resources do you use?

Bagels by the Park DOH’d

A CHB tipster alerts us that  Bagels by the Park [323 Smith Street] has been DOH’d.  A seemingly chewed up handwritten note claims the closure is due to their “outside area” and its “proximity to subway”.  They claim they’ll be re-opening “shortly”.  More photos after the jump. Continue Reading →
