Helping Neighbors – Jeep Guy

Dear Jeep Guy –
This photo was taken two weeks ago, and posted in a discussion about Barneys. This morning I noticed that your car is still parked in the same spot, but now covered in Sanitation Dept stickers and scribbles about NYPD Towing.
You might want to move it ASAP.

Sincerely,
CHB

Open Thread: What Are We Missing?

While we try to be everywhere and cover everything, the sad truth is that it ain’t possible (especially while working in Manhattan).
What do you want to know more about? What are we lacking? What are you doing this weekend?

It appears that construction on our local Barneys is underway. Earlier estimates have the store opening this Fall.

WTF @ Atlantic Key Foods, Part 2

Our neighborhood Key Food has recently become an internet sensation, with their green meat and odd seafood.
I decided to give them another visit, and the “seafood section” provided yet another gem, “Boneless —-”. They don’t have to worry changing this expiration date as I have no doubt that this will fly off the shelf before it expires in two months.
If you see anything fun at Key Food (or any of our neighborhood grocery stores), please snap a photo and email it to us: tips AT cobblehillblog DOT com. Let’s make this a fun project, but also pressure our local shops to clean up!

Helping Neighbors – Mitchell B

Local hero, Mitchell Bisschop, is probably best known as the incredibly friendly bartender slinging drinks at neighborhood bars Last Exit and the Bell House. What you may not be familiar with however are his film-making talents. Mitch’s most recent work at Wondershot has garnered nationwide critical acclaim for their humorous sports shorts.

The Brooklyn resident is now making a documentary film that gets back to his Midwestern roots. Originally from Illinois, his former high school is creating an endowment for the arts by reuniting 60 years of high school theater alumni to put on one more show. He is raising money for his film via Kickstarter (New York based) so that he may capture the guts and glory that goes into putting on a play when you haven’t done so in 30 years. The stakes are raised as arts funding has been slashed in the state of Illinois causing this group to be performing for a much greater cause, possibly saving the theater department all together.

To see this ambitious project through, he is collecting donations online at the link below. If you can contribute, or know someone who may want to donate please pass this link around: http://kck.st/azYgAQ

WTF @ Atlantic Ave Key Food?

When they’re not changing dates on spoiled meat, our local supermarket has decided to have fun with their label maker. Presenting “octopus” – or imitation crab, squid, shrimp, mussels, etc. Barf.

Sidewalk Corn Rising at Smith and Bergen!

In this photo from Twitter user FitBeth, it appears that planters for the Smith St Sidewalk Corn project are in place, awaiting their maize.
Edible food on our sidewalks – should we be more concerned about bugs and rodents, or those damn freegan hippies that hangout outside Trader Joes?

What Happened to Stan’s? (and another new Resto on Atlantic)

On her way back from Captain Quinn’s Boot Camp this morning, my wife Beth noticed a few new places popping up on Atlantic Ave and hit the pavement to explore. Starting with the most shocking, Stan’s Place, the 5 year staple at Atlantic and Bond, has been transformed into Rothschild’s – a black-painted mystery. Any intel from our commenters? Stan’s was one of the few places in the neighborhood with good biscuits and gravy, (and Abita) so it will be a loss.

Further down Atlantic, between Smith and Boerum and next to the bicycle shop, a new restaurant appears to be opening. A notice in the window shows that they had a liquor license hearing last month. Did anyone attend? Any tips on this as well?

Sidewalk Corn, Actually Happening?!

A few days ago, I jokingly referenced a proposal to plant corn in one of our lovely new sidewalk “neckdowns” – those large new patches of pedestrian concrete. But while I may have viewed it as humorous, the DOT did not. According to the Brooklyn Paper, local resident Christina Kelly has been given the green light to plant corn, beans and squash at the corner of Smith and Bergen Streets. It is “part of an art project called “Maize Field” that examines the borough’s agrarian past and offers a living meditation on the idea of change.”
If we get sidewalk plantings along Atlantic Ave, I’m hoping for grape vines and olive trees, reflecting the area’s Arabic history.
