This week’s edition of This American Life on NPR features stories about building superintendents. One of the chapters tells the tale of a New York City super who claimed to have a shady past in Brazil and who ends up being a key witness in a murder trial.
That got us thinkin’, are there any “colorful” supers in the neighborhood? Comment below.

I was close — too close for words — to renting an apartment near Park Slope a few years ago. It was tiny, but the woman who owned it/showed it to me was so grandmotherly and charming that I lost sight of everything else. Then, on a whim, I googled the woman. Guess what? That sweet old lady was apparently one of the worst landlords in the city! She had, I think, two entire blogs devoted to her. She’d been on the news. There’d been newspaper articles about how terrible she was to her tenants… I just squeaked out of what I’m guessing would’ve been a very, very bad living situation. Colorful, maybe. Frightening? Absolutely.
unfortunately, i live in a building in cobble hill in which the dirtiest, foulest smelling part of the building is the area around the super’s apartment. the animal odors coming from his door make garbage on the street in august seem pleasant. when i moved in, i thought, “great, a live in super will make getting things fixed much easier!” i couldn’t have been more wrong. there must be some seriously strict laws in place preventing the removal of supers for this man to still be allowed to live here.
