Sicko Torches P.S. 29 Jungle Gym

The brand spankin’ new playground at P.S. 29 was torched last night apparently by some kid-hatin’ psycho.  We’ll leave a tiny bit of room for “accidental” pending official word from authorities.

We learned of the blaze, reported by Bococaland, via Simon van Kempen’s Twitter feed:

What asshole would burn Johan’s school’s brand new jungle gym w/ 20 foot’ flames at midnight last night? I hate you!

CHB pal/Bococaland founder Toby reports:

[Someone was parking] their car last night around 12:30am and saw 20 ft flames emanating from the schoolyard. They called the fire department and the police are now investigating.

I hope the parents that have keys are feeling guilty. The yard should be locked overnight for everyone’s safety.

I hope that the equipment is mostly metal so that a fresh coat of paint will put it back in action.

The parent who posted above should feel deeply ashamed for trying to blame other parents at PS 29 for simply volunteering to try to help faciliate keeping the schoolyard open for the community on weekends. The comment makes clear that this person is clearly not part of the parent group who has 1) worked for years to help make the renovation happen, for the benefit of the entire neighborhood and 2) does not actively volunteer to help ensure the yard’s accessibility. The only parents who should be feeling guilty are the ones like the above, who will criticize without lending a hand, and the parents of the teens who were out wandering the neighborhood after midnight and set fire to NYC Department of Education property, and then abandoned the scene. Let’s hope the parent commenter calls or emails the principal first thing on Monday morning to offer some constructive help to lock the gates on weekend evenings and to unlock the gates early on Sat or Sun mornings. Or perhaps he or she will volunteer to actively raise funds for lighting and security cameras.
