Machete Brings B-Movie Flavor to Cobble Hill Cinema

He funded his first movie, “El Mariachi” by selling his body to science for $7,000. He has since birthed a following much like Quentin Tarentino. Robert Rodriguez’ new movie “Machete” opened this weekend. I treated myself to a Saturday romp through violence. The violence did not disappoint.

Fans of the double feature “Grindhouse” from a few years ago will remember Danny Trejo portraying “Machete” in the faux trailer between “Death Proof” and “Planet Terror.” The hilarity of this trailer, along with its sister “Thanksgiving” (‘White meat, dark meat…all will be carved’), persuaded TROUBLMAKER STUDIO to turn “Machete” into a full feature.

Here is the thing: go into this movie with an understanding of ‘B-Movies’ and you will leave with a smirk that only 11 ultra-fake decapitations can produce. If you expect an Oscar winning performance from De Niro (yep, he’s in it) you will be sorely disappointed. As Cobble Hilllbilly, Noah Elgart quoted: “I think it is fair to say that it will meet sales expectations from Cobble Hill Cinema.” Elgart went on to say, “It’s entertaining. Don’t make it anything it isn’t. It is a splatter movie, nothing more nothing less.”
As with some of Rodriguez’ movies, the story lacked a bit. However, when you can see Lindsay Lohan (she is in it too) in a nun outfit sporting a .44 magnum, who the hell needs story?

See it. And see it at Cobble Hill Cinemas. Splatter films and B-Movies are best served in small settings…not at a megaplex.
