The luxury high rise BellTel Lofts was the place to be last night, as CHB faves Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen hosted the American Cancer Society‘s “Eat, Drink and Be Hopeful” food and wine event. Alex and Simon were among the many on hand to check out some of the tasteful silent auction items and raffle prizes, and of course to sample some of Brooklyn’s finest purveyors of food and drink, including Brooklyn Brewery, DuMont, Henry’s End, Palo Santo and many more. Margo Lewis, the brains (and brawn) behind Cake Bliss and the newly opened Ms. Dahlia’s Cafe, presented a cake decorating lesson in the VIP room. For Ms. Lewis, it’s personal: she’s a cancer survivor herself.
Alex McCord explained her inspiration for offering to host the delectable evening:
Simon and I were so happy to support the Brooklyn chapter of ACS – cancer unfortunately touches so many people and between the two of us have friends and family who have fought and survived the disease and have also sadly lost a few as well. We need to continue raising money for both R&D, early diagnosis and also not forget the caregivers who give of themselves to those who are fighting the disease.
Last night we had a chance to give back in so many ways – raising money to fight cancer, celebrating Brooklyn and all the great small business owners who provided the food and drink!

@landlord: Do you have a problem with local celebrities pitching in to raise money to fight cancer? Regardless of their closely examined lifestyle and what is represented on TV, Alex and Simon are kind, generous people.
And what’s wrong with sending your kids to public school?
I don’t watch Real Housewives, so I can’t say whether they portray themselves as rich socialites or if that’s just the angle taken by the show. But I will say that there are a lot of parents out there who are pleased with the education their children receive in public school. While it’s true that New York’s public schools are struggling (in large part due to budget cuts and No Child Left Behind restrictions), having cared for a number of public schooled children, I can say for certain that they still produce bright, engaged minds.
I have to say that “landlord” is one of my favorite commenters but I didn’t think that he (?) would hate on public schools. Are you more Trump or Mr. Fields?
“I wish all of the Jonah’s out there would shut the hell up. They really bother me.”
lol
As Chief Correspondent for Cobble Hill Blog (no secrets here), your chances, landlord, of getting me to shut the hell up are slim to none. But we’re in agreement – I’m as much of a reality TV hater as you. In fact, I don’t even own a TV. But I will defend people I consider friends, outside of any alternative TV realities they may inhabit.
CharlieS… I know where you live.
Jonah … I know that you like long walks on the beach.
As someone who would like to visit this site more often, since I live in CH, I always say to myself, but I bet there’s gonna be another stop-the-presses! item about this Alex McCord person, and damn it if I’m not right. I’ll try again in a couple of months, and maybe by then she’ll have moved to ever-hipper Bushwick and her friend the “Chief Correspondent” — that admission explains a lot — can cover something else? Perhaps your editorial policy of having “faves” needs to be re-thought. Or just change the url to cobblehillpressreleases.com
