The NY Daily News reports that 50 prisoners bunked at the Brooklyn House of Detention last night.  Those 50, according to the report, will be painting and getting the place ready for 1,500 of their closest friends:

NY Daily News: Critics howl…: Inmates bunked at the Brooklyn House of Detention last night for the first time in five years – a sleepover critics worry is a risky first step in a controversial jail expansion plan.

About 50 sentenced inmates were expected to stay overnight in the out-of-use jail, Department of Correction spokesman Stephen Morello said.

City Councilman David Yassky said he fears the surprise reopening aims to preempt opposition to the city’s plan to eventually house 1,500 inmates at the site.

“I think they’re trying to push prisoners into these cells,” Yassky said.

The city stopped housing inmates overnight at the 759-bed Brooklyn jail in 2003 in response to a plunging inmate population.
