Sidewalk Corn, Actually Happening?!

A few days ago, I jokingly referenced a proposal to plant corn in one of our lovely new sidewalk “neckdowns” – those large new patches of pedestrian concrete. But while I may have viewed it as humorous, the DOT did not. According to the Brooklyn Paper, local resident Christina Kelly has been given the green light to plant corn, beans and squash at the corner of Smith and Bergen Streets. It is “part of an art project called “Maize Field” that examines the borough’s agrarian past and offers a living meditation on the idea of change.”
If we get sidewalk plantings along Atlantic Ave, I’m hoping for grape vines and olive trees, reflecting the area’s Arabic history.
