The long-anticipated Mile End Montreal Jewish Deli opens today at 97A Hoyt Street, according to Canada’s The Globe and Mail. Something I do not appreciate published alongside the story: a video entitled “American Ignorance Extends to Montreal Smoked Meat.” C’mon, like we really need to be bothered with knowing about Canadian meat? Note to Mile End owner Noah Bernamoff: poor choice associating yourself and your new venture with this video/media outlet.

Toronto’s Globe & Mail is a major national newspaper in Canada; too bad that most NYers are clueless about Montreal Smoked Meat. Mile End has received an absolute ton of pre-opening publicity, though. I was there Tuesday, getting lost in the process, and walking vast amounts of territory on streets I’d never been on before, after decades of living in the Heights. They were, alas, temporarily out of MSM when I was there. The place is quite intimate, and the tiny bit of MSM I was offered as a “taste” was quite good.
Once inside, I broke out my “Schwartz’s – Montreal” cap, which the proprietors liked. I’ll be back soon. A lot easier to walk to Mile End than take an 11-hour train ride to Montreal!
I’m very excited to check out Mile End myself. I do not, however, appreciate Americans being called ignorant over some smoked meat. As someone who does not eat meat, I’m really looking forward to some vegetarian poutine. Has anyone tried it yet?
walked by today, it was packed, i’ll wait til the hubbub dies down..
They’re already looking for more help:
