The New York Times featured a story on Creative Cooks, a Boerum Hill-based culinary center designed for kids. Started by native New Yorker Emily Rios, the school exposes children from ages 5 through 11 to different varieties of food, from both a culinary and ethnic viewpoint.

NYT: The school’s kitchen, on the ground floor of a row house, would be the envy of most home cooks. It is painted yellow with red lacquered cabinets generously stocked with all manner of culinary tools. There is a large refrigerator, a deep fryer, a blender for making dough and fillings, a bamboo sushi rolling mat and a shelf of white aprons labeled big and small.

When it is time to cook, everybody puts on an apron and sits down to watch Ms. Rios demonstrate how to measure ingredients and handle utensils. “Being prepared is half the battle in terms of keeping their attention,” Ms. Rios said. “A lot of the dishes I choose have multiple steps and are interesting to prepare.”
