July 4th weekend: stay or go?

july-4

With the first summer weekend almost absent of rain behind us, it’s going to be the 4th of July before we know it. Are you saying “economy be damned, I’m taking a weekend trip,” or are you going to stick around the city for fireworks on the Promenade and free events around the city (despite the increased $2.25 MTA fare and subway delays up the wazoo)?

I hate to tell you, but there will be no fireworks from the Promenade this year. All the fireworks are on the Hudson and it’s doubtful one would be able to see anything. This seriously ruins my usual rooftop party plans.

Yikes… didn’t realize there were no fireworks on the Promenade this year- sorry for the misspeak!

Yes, apparently New York City’s fireworks are only for the benefit of the people on the West side of Manhattan and New Jersey. Screw the millions of others who live in the other boroughs.

2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson river by Henry Hudson. That is why Macy’s is putting all the fireworks in the Hudson river this year. Hopefully they will be back on both rivers next year.

Do you think Cory that we will have a “East River” only fireworks one day? snobing the Hudson side? I don’t think so ;)

I hate to break it to you, but Henry Hudson did not discover the “Hudson” river. Rumor has it there were people living in this area long before Henry Hudson was even born!

Wow, how did I not expect someone to remind me that there were people here before Hudson. Thanks for the reminder.

I would love to snob the Hudson side someday. Anyone know when the East River was discovered…er…um…dredged?
