Buh Bye: Chicory

Eater reports that Chicory [243 Degraw Street] has closed:
Eater: Though the above signage isn’t in itself ‘teary’, it sounds like the response to the closing of Brooklyn’s Chicory is a tad weepy. From a tipster: “Cobble Hill neighborhood joint Chicory is closed. Looks like it happened over the weekend. It’s a shame; Gavin served food that was noticeably a cut above the rest in that area.”

Id have to assume its because of rent as well. Can anybody recommend another sandwich shop in the area?

The food was good, but the service was abysmal and many an employee was borderline hostile. That simply won’t cut it for a cutthroat business in a neighborhood with options a plenty.

The food was good, but expensive. I would, once in a while, treat my husband to a piece of fried chicken but could not afford anything for myself. The employees were extremely rude. I wish the owners well, and hope that a new eatery opens soon.

Joe’s Supperette on Smith street by President street, the place looks run down, but has been there for decades, they also have the best prosciutto balls. Also Espositto’s pork store on Court street by president, the Italian special is insane, also great meatballs, and homemade sopprasetta.. Sorry if you’re a vegetarian..The place that used to be in Chicory Dom’s had the best sandwiches, He was there for decades as well, in the 70’s customers could put things “on the bill” and pay monthly, it was a book he wrote in by hand.. old school..

Yes, the employees were extremely rude: condescending, even threatening. I was threatened on more than one occasion–very ghetto, “You wanna complain about that sandwich, you come to my hood. Bed-Stuy,” the guy said when I took back an overcooked, burnt sandwich. Gavin wasn’t there and probably didn’t know about any of this. and he himself was a good guy, but needed a business manager, apparently.
Also, while the food was amazing in the beginning, it declined precipitously in recent months. Actually, once a diehard fan, I stopped going all together.

Say what you will about it, but there really is nothing else in Chicory’s league in the nabe. While the Italian places do make some good sandwiches, they all close super early and don’t cater to the new generation that works late.
Chicory had a nice variety of sandwiches, salads, and a damn good burger.
Sad to see it go, and hoping someone else steps up to fill the void.

Suerte: Ditto on Joe’s Superette. Their rice balls are great and their sandwiches are excellent and huge. I order a hero with fresh mozzarella and gobbagol (sp? - spicy ham cappacola - heck I’m probably spelling that incorrectly too), L&T, and sliced pickle or cherry peppers with oil and vinegar - awesome.

I happened to stop by the last day they were open. Gavin told me he couldn’t find good help. He wasn’t more specific and I didn’t press the issue. I went often and was always treated well by the staff. I definitely miss the place.
According to Gavin he’s going to cook on someone’s boat and see the world.

I went by on Friday night and it was gone. Sad, really.
Anyone know why it shut? Rent too high, perhaps, like so many other places in the neighborhood?
